About the CRAThe City of Coral Springs, Florida, is well known as one of the most successfully planned suburban communities in the country. Incorporated in 1963, the diversity character and quality of the City’s housing stock is remarkable; and the general attributes of the City, including schools, parks, economic development and fiscal integrity, are enviable. In 1997, Coral Springs was the first public entity in Florida to win the Governor’s Sterling Award for Quality and Performance Excellence. The City has also received Wall Street’s highest mark of distinction, earning AAA credit ratings on both its General Obligation Bonds and its Water and Sewer Bond Series. As the City matures, the need for a focal point has become apparent. The City is proactively intervening in the declining economic and physical character of its central area. The City is committed to transforming the area around the University Drive/Sample Road intersection, one of the busiest in the City, into an attractive and desirable downtown to serve as a functional and symbolic center of the City. The Downtown Coral Springs initiative is the result of the convergence of traditional community redevelopment practices and emergent principles of new urbanism, sustainability and "smart growth." Downtown Coral Springs has an approved Community Redevelopment Plan and is in the process of seeking approval of an Area-wide Development of Regional Impact application. The first phase of development will commence at the southeast corner or the Sample Road/University Drive intersection in early 2003 and build-out to occur within 8 years. |
